2021 USA GP Race Discussion

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

We are back for the USA GP to COTA after a gap last year and what a race did we witness! This is literally history in the making, it’s the Clash of the Titans! With about 400,000 people in attendance during this weekend, Max and Lewis put up a show that is worthy of a tense championship battle that we are currently in. While there was an intense battle for the lead, all the other midfield teams were also battling it out to try and gain some extra points.

And with that let's get into the episode of my God, yesterday was a thriller, of pure thriller, from the First Turn to the twentieth turn. Just a banger. Yeah, I mean wow, it took me some time to really diedest the whole race. Like I had to sit down after the race to really understand what's going on because, to think about it, right, like we didn't actually see wheel to wheel battle between Max and Lewis, but nonetheless I think we had probably one of the best races till now. And Wow it was. It was a battle of strategies, you know, it was basically it's not just it wasn't just looise versus Max, it was, you know, all the people who have contributed to either of those teams fighting against each other, because this is like the culumn nation of everyone's efforts. Because not just that, Max and Lewis drove brilliantly, the strategies were on point, everything was, yeah, just amazing, I guess. Yeah, no, absolutely true. And you hit it on the nail there. It was more like they were out of the fifty six laps. They were like just a few laps where both of them were in the frame on the same screen. Otherwise they were like, you know, quite apart, and yet it felt like they were going at it just milliseconds away. Right. So, and absolutely like except vote, as I think everyone else who was so in bold, like the whole Mercedes garage, the whole red bull garage, both the drivers on Red Bull and obviously only Louis. Someone side just just do brilliant. Yep, you know what? I really think that in the future will think about these races and think about, oh, those good old days. I mean this is really steamer making, yes, that you know,...

...we have like the world's two best drivers and the two best teams and yeah, it's just brillion so alid round. And the awesome thing about it is like none of like, either of them made no mistakes at all. Like I can't point to a single moment for both of them were, you know, they messed up. It was just heads down and yeah, it was. Yeah, I don't know, they were enough. Different zone altogether, I guess. Yeah, right, like Louis Lewis hasn't felt that serious to me for races now. Not even one scrapped about his tires. In fact, on the contrary, he came out of the radio and said these starts feel fine. A second bitch stop. They went whatever their original plan was and guessing there was lap thirty or thirty one, but like plus six on their original plan. So, yeah, yesterday was a different Luis on the track. I think, like I have a feeling like he's seeing his championship slip away and yeah, I think he's now getting into that zone where the realization has it and he knows he needs to give his head down, both as he may or may not have to rely on him. But yeah, what has busy anyways? Creating his own garage of engine so yeah, I think. I think instead of a troophy room, he's probably creating an engine room in his house, an alternate sorrier. I think probably do. In fact, you know what, I saw a tweet that, sorry, on instagram. He put a post on instagram where he whisky photoshopped his face ace on some guy in a shop and like he's selling engine parts. But yeah, coming going back to these things, are a body called Battle of titans yesterday, right, yeah, man, no mistakes made whatsoever. The beauty of it was, I feel like, pitch stops, right, like, yeah, the whole game. Right, those those three drivers, and I keep saying three drivers because I think like Checko was equally involved in that battle between Max and Max and Louis there. So all those things into two six pitch stops have been so accurately done. Obviously some serender toy here and therefore maybe Louis, but eventually Max getting the better hand out of it. Yeah, those pitch stops. Some comments there's are those pitch stops? Yeah, I mean both right, like Red Bull. I mean mark has made a lot of mistakes in the past with pit stops, but I think yesterday they were on point. Red Bull, obviously everyone knows that. That's pretty much one of their trends. So we kind of expect that from Red Bull by now, I think pretty much these days, if they don't do to second pit stop, everyone's like you know what up in that did happen yesterday. So I think I forget if it was Brundle or crafty at that point, but Max dide a two point eight and they were like, oh, that's a slower which stop. Well, if you consider red bull, who had like five up two second which tops, then yes, there was a slower one. So yes, I think brundle was right, like a two point eight fell slow for red will, but it's still insanely fast. M Yeah, and one awesome thing that I liked about yesterday's race was that I think both teams were open to trying some radically different things in terms of strategy, because I think at some point it was kind of an equal match between...

...them in the sense that both had some strengths and some weaknesses. Yes, and they were exactly complimenting each other in that sense. So it was, I'm pretty sure, very difficult to judge what the correct strategy is, because red pull was taking a huge risk the right like pitting that early on. But yeah, beautifully pulled up because I think they realized that he was doing good when the tires were like in the initial stage and he completely took advantage of it right like every time it was so weird, like one was petting, he was falling back, then you know, catching up other than the other one. Yeah, yeah, that's sing up there the other and so it was. I don't know, throughout the race, I there was not a single moment when I thought that, yeah, this is the person who's going to win because, yeah, you never knew what's going to happen next. Yeah, no, I think I texted you yesterday that I think I can see who's going to win, like I can see one of these drivers winning for themselves. And as soon as I texted, I think things that fear are on. It is like this is gonna be like the last laugh thing. But but let's let's start from the top, right, like red bull having that advantage p one. Start for Max Lewis having the inner line, which is usually actually this is this is this is a track where people, like drivers, don't want to go for a p one because they get that in her line, that first left turn is is favorable for inners. And I don't know if Louis was going for a P to. But yeah, he was comfortable there, although although yesterday was into one of those stunner race starts from Max Right. That was that was an interesting one, because what ended up happening was like now, brundle and crafty and folks talk to pick garize as well. Right, and Christian honors was on the commentary box yesterday and they asked him and he was like, yeah, Kudos to Louis for a brilliant race start. We had, on the other hand, in average one and letting. That's why Louis led into the race. Okay, not gonna lie. Or a person who doesn't want to lose two win that. I was a bit heartbroken, but but yeah, could us to Louis for forgetting that brain ray start? Yep, no, definitely. And in fact, when when he actually like took off right after turn one, he did build up some gap with Nach. Yes, that point it felt to me like maybe, you know, he's just going to take it away. Yes, but yeah, Max, because in terms of straight line speed, most he's had an advantage. I think red bull on this track was like the third, third fastest card. So you know, obviously they had some deficit in that tongue. But the good thing was that the initial two laps Max Somehow was able to just hold on to, you know, to stay in the DRS range and when in lap three he got the drs, he was able to, you know, then then on just like be there constantly. Yeah, but I feel like he was. He was pushing himself to the limit, because I remember him coming under the radio and saying that cars drifting, he's feeling his rears wobble. So obviously he was in the dirty s section from Lewis Ahead, in which case we've seen Louise just back off because he takes a step behind and then tries to bounce back. But in this situation, yeah, it felt like Max was pushing his car to the limit. Yep. So the awesome thing about the whole reason general was like, not only was Max driving brilliantly, I think he was also calling out some strategies as well while driving the actually, I don't remember, was it the yeah, I didn't remember if it was the first pit stop of the...

...second, but I think right after that he was like, you know again, yeah, I use like, you know, I think he'll be use check her to cover Hamilton and instantly. Right after that, they pitted him. Let's let's let's deviate a bit here for folks who follow us for our passion but for some reason don't haven't seen their said. Don't know the context here. Just just filling you in on what's happened. Laptin. Max pags and he's going for a classic undercut on Lewis, hoping Louis pits in the next lap or two so he has that advantage to then bounce on Lewis's tires, but Lewis doesn't at that point. I just am so old by by Max's calmness in this race that he comes out of the radio and cause out a strategy to use Checko against Lewis so that they pit check O, checker gets new tires, who will be at that point closer to Lewis and can make Louise Push more, in turn wearing loose the tires out. So just Doo brilliant, just two brilliant from Max at this point. Now, that's that's really spot on right. Like it felt like Max was, you know, fighting for his seventh world championship yesterday because honestly, like the level of maturity that he had of calling those strategy calls yes is unexpected, right, for someone who is trying to compete for his first championship. It really didn't feel that. And like Max is infamous for. You know his hottedness and you know his jumping to rash conclusions, I would say, but yesterday it seemed like he was just calm as a convert, right, and I mean like if someone was to compare this maxx with the Max from two years back who pushed cocon off of Interlagos, it's yeah, they're just two different Max mean this entire season, the boger he shown is just like a seventime world champion, as as you mentioned. Yeah, yeah, and that's perfect right. And the same goes for Louis as well. I would say, like it felt like he was different yesterday. It he was not his own self in the sense that you know, usually, we have joked about this a lot on this podcast before as well, that he always complains about his tiles, but till yesterday, I think was something different. I didn't hear him even once complain about anything, actually, forget his tires, and he was just all in. He was completely into what he was doing and I think, and that kept him busy pretty much because at the end of the race, after you know, when they come out and they do the weighing and everything, right, there was this one shot where Max was like, you know, being congratulated by other than Lewis was sitting like inside and he really seemed exhausted after the race, which which, you know, makes me think that he really really had to fight for it to try and be there at different because we essentially are in like the home stretch of the season, right. It's yeah, how many five races left by or six racesn't exactly, and I think, like Lewis, realizes that there isn't going to be a lot of opportunity for him now to like recover from this, because if you consider the next two races, this is Mexico and Brazil, both of which...

...are high altitude races, and it is known that red will has an advantaged it. So and again, the last races such a remaining, I think, Saudi Arabia and Cathart, right, I guess? Yeah, yeah, and even those are unknowns. So who knows what's going to happen? Yeah, I mean yesterday, I think the only, if you want to call it a complaint sort of thinking. The only thing I remember Louis saying on the radio is he is quicker than me, and this is this is when. This is when Max was chasing Lewis, so even before the first pit stop. But otherwise it was all like a good motivational and sort of like keeping everyone in check. Communication between the garage raid like every time they came on. I remember there was this time where toto came on himself and he was like, Lewis, we are racing for the win here, and at that point he did feel like he was comfortable. Lap. I think it is like lap thirty three or thready four. Louis still hadn't bittered. So there was this Barcelona movement probably going to happen where he would have had fresh attires and whatever time to chase max down. But at the same time Christian honor on the commentary side was was pretty sure it is going to come down to the last few laps. I think at some point one of them also said is going to come down to the last two laps, which it which it eventually did. Serving everyone was just to everyone was just too serious yesterday and it showed on that track. Is What an entertaining race they've given. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I have no words. Like yesterday was something phenomenal that I saw. I love it that this season has turned out the way it has. Yes, I love it that, luckily, the rules change were postponed by a year, so teams haven't actually invested a lot and this year's cars as much. So that kind of has gotten all the teams closer, and we could see that throughout the race. Like, yeah, Max and Lewis, yes, but apart from them as well, like it was just good performances all around pretty much in the race. Yeah, so, yeah, I'm just happy to be here and, you know, watch these says is as they go back. True, I feel I feel sad for some of the fans who, and I know some personally to like who stopped watching the sport because it was a host dominant era. Yeah, and I mean I just like to tell tell them that this year it's been nothing but otherwise and it's been one phenomenal race after the other. You rightly to point out like there were amazing various battles as well. It did feel like there was some traffic yesterday. And last point on before we move to other battles, which is like this traffic seem to be sort of like an unlucky factor for Max yesterday because he kept getting stuck in those Lewis had an advantage to sort of, you know, shorten his gap with Max in front of him, and there was this brilliant movement where I think Max recovered all his luck of the unlucky traffic towards the end with the with the house. Yep, Oh, yeah, that's called right, right, all messy to get that horse out of my way. Yeah, I use knew was so bang on with his high I mean it wasn't anger, it was just like adrenaline rushed voice, but it was. It was a brilliant adrenal in aggression get that horspite of my way, and justifiably right, because, like, you never know what they get, the horse might do, because, you know what, like, I think a few a few laps back he was trying to overtake the HARS of Nikita and the Alpha of Kimmy right and they just wouldn't let him pass. I think like Kimmy got a black and white...

...flag for not, you know, following the blue flag. I mean also did en done at the end of the day, I think like the gap, you know, between Max and Lewis came down from eight seconds like five seconds. So, Yep, yeah, you're ready to call that out. But Hey, hey, on the on the other side, he got the dress and then Louis unfortunately. Yeah, so that, I was again, very nail biting. That works for US fans. Yeah, definitely. Well, wow, I mean I'm just I'm still, you know, I'm still buzzing from the whole action. It's been a day now, but I'm still buzzing from right now. And Yeah, it's it's awesome, right, because it's not just them at the front. Battles were going on, as we mentioned earlier, throughout the field. Just to list a few, right, like kimmy versus Alonso. That was something Alonso has generally. What was Alon you doing? Yes, I have no idea. I have no idea that guy. I mean, generally speaking, he is a very theen racer or such. Right, yeah, and I've generally not seen him racing dirty, but yesterday it seemed like, I don't know, elbows out pushing. Yeah, yeah, and elbows out, you know, generally elbows out of something which is still fair racing. Right, but yesterday it seemed like he he was desperate and just, you know, being a little too aggressive like that, that overtake, not over take, but like that defense with kimmy where he basically pushed him off the track. Right, yeah, they and they're completely alli and I think like Jimmy's rearing flu or some some piece bog, I don't know who. something. Yeah, some piece broke up. I did see that. Yep, Yep. And on top of that, he's complaining that gimm overtook me outside the track. I mean where would he go? Right, not just not just in? Did you notice that? I forget. I'll beans boss's name, but like I'll be in. Was On radio with FIA Pale and Martin. Hey, is it okay to overtake out of outside of that track? And it was a beautiful conversation because it's because Michael Massey's like no, and then this guy goes so, but KIMMI can do that. Say Yes, no, but it's okay for Kimmy to do it's not okay for anyone to do it. So and then he goes off and does the same thing with Geo exactly. And in fact, in fact, that was weird. First it was it was a bit dangerous, you know, if you saw the way he overshot that corner right. Yeah, I mean if you look at Geo's camp right, it's very clear that Geo had to break a lot to be able to not hit Alonso, because the way he cut through the track right in front of Geo, that was like it would have been a crash if not for Geo Breaking and avoiding it. So, yeah, I don't I don't understand what was going on and I think like it did feel like alongso he just forgotten to break there and and he comes back onto that track and is just so happy that he was able to take geo lead to give that position. I think. I think the next move from him on Geo where he pushed Geo out, and I'm saying this he pushed him out because if you see the replace and in all honestly, was like he pushed him out and just say the corner and then Geo had to give it back. It will like a high school radio message between Geo and I'll fa get you are Alpha garage is like give the position back and Geo the GOLS. But he pushed me out, like no, discussions give the position back. Yeah, it totally felt like retaliation from Geo because like he pushed about and suddenly it was very clear that he like drove the...

...car and tried to push out also, and so and yeah, but I mean I think it kind of his understandable add two speeds when some drivers really driving aggressively and trying to push out of the track. I think it's natural for anyone to, you know, get angry. And Yeah, finally, yesterday Geo was in Super Line Light. Actually, yeah, he had this stint with Alonso. He had a stint with battle to write. I think couple other places will I think I saw Jee Geo a lot of times yesterday. He did come out. So once he did come out between Max and Lewis. Oh, yeah, one of them petted, so he was he was somewhere in between there, and then one of them I over take Geo. So yes geo was quite a lot in line like yesterday. Yep, I think another person who was getting a lot of limelight was Sonoda. Right again, I think he's somewhat becoming a expert at holding back mercedies because, yeah, I guess they start them young. Idris Look Adam, because a last rays it was him versus Lewis and I think held held him up for like five laps, and again this time with both as they were not not over but twice, but by see exactly why. Yes, it's not like that. He defends in some dangerous manners it. He does it very beautifully as well, like he places his car such that you just cannot overtake the yeah, I'm actually quite impressed by his performance in the last two races. Yeah, I guess like because of yesterday's positioning of his car and some some better cars being behind him. It's not happened as much as it's happened since the second half of the seasons began, and I think that's why we're probably getting to see. You know, that this side of a driver is. Before that it was just him racing with Alpha and has and maybe someone wouldn't dry well, right, or the Williams. But but then it also kind of boils down to the fact that he's able to perform better in qualification these days. Yeah, because of which he's he is there in the action now instead of going battling with the back manthis yeah, maybe he's just taken like some some more time than usual to get familiar with like fone and of the car here, way longer than probably others should have. So but I guess it's eventually giving us fans at least some good racing from his silf in fact, I saw interview of him, I think right after yesterday's race, where he basically said that earlier on he kind of misjudged fone. That's what he said, in the sense that he thought it would be a lot easier than what he experienced and probably kind of he went in with some amount of overconfidence, I would say, which kind of backfired. And I think another thing that he mentioned that they have like hired a driving coach for him now has, you know, probably like helping him to get a tune to the car better the and what he currently is. So I think that, I think is helping him out, which we can clearly see interesting. Okay, this is this is interesting. I mean I definitely be up to seeing how his career fans out. Is I mean my opinion about him as changed. For sure that Alpha toury is not a bad car, because both o those drivers...

...positioned themselves well in the past few races. So it's been. It's been doing good. Let's see how twenty, twenty, two pans out for these two is. Aston Mordin's not getting anywhere. I'll be in. Yeah, they're having fun, so I'm rooting hooding for Red Bull Junior team up. But coming coming back to race start and the whole the whole start, there was some amazing battle guy right between four people. And Yeah, reads and red versus orange. Yep. Well, I think McLaren and Ferrari are so perfectly matched in pace currently that the last five races are going to be brilliant with them, for because by now all of them have gotten at tuned to their cars now and at the same time, the performance wise as well. They're pretty comparatible. And why does this chaos in love one with those four were? At one point they were like they were driving in a group literally. Yeah, yeah, those four were right on each other. I think it was like and and I could be wrong with the order, but it was like an orange, red, orange, red, and those for were just like in tandem, overtaking each other, falling back, going ahead, falling back, going ahead. Cha. Think the leader would was just suffling around between them for yeah, yeah, those were exactly those. Those four positions were going back and for just amongst themselves. Yeah, it was it was pretty awesome and still clean racing, like nobody touched each other. Yeah, I'm considering like Ricardo is a comparatively aggressive driver. I such you know, with this he laid dive bobs that he does sometimes. Yeah, but yeah, they didn't touch and we got to see some amazing action. There was this moment towards the end of the race between science and Ricardo. Right like there was this place where science was trying to or take record on the outside. Oh yeah, there's this cheeky moment. Nothing on purpose, but I think adrenaline science was on the radio saying he did this to me on purpose. Yeah, I think it was another interesting thing that happened. I think that was in the first lap battle with them for I think signs obviously, like they were driving so close by, so somebody was bound to off track. You know, you can't. You can't take the corner with four cars next to each other. So I think there was this moment where science kind of went outside the track and he got an advantage and overtook Nolrie. But I think with the whole confusion of all the cars over there. He probably didn't exactly figure out who he exactly over took because he considered his position to Ricardo instead of Norris, and then I think his engineer came on the radio and told him that, you know, you have to concede the position too, Nolris, and he's like no, wait, I just considered it to Ricardo, so I'm not doing it again. Yeah, you got you got to confuse yourselves. If you see too much orange and reads around you right same don't know what's happening. Some are in smoke, also in the air. It's yeah, you know, but I think, I think he was allowed to keep his position because he did concede instantly. So I think that they kind of gave him the benefit of doubt for that, you know. You know what's interesting is we were able to see all of this and like discuss it right now. So they like Kudos to whoever was sitting behind switching louise cameras and showing us every bit of it. Yep, Yep, definitely. I think the TV direction was just stop, notch it. Like I was pretty sure, like I was ninety nine percent confident that, since...

...it is the USGP, obviously there will be some celebrities and they will cut the footage in between to show some celebrity doing some you know, random, random things. But thankfully they didn't do that. I think there was just two cuts, but I think once was for George Lucas and the other one was for who is it? Somebody else? Been Seiler, I think. Yeah, but yeah, it was during dull moments of the race and they didn't really cut out anything. So all right, that's fine, I guess. So I'm quite happy that none of that nonsense happened yesterday with the TV direction. Yeah, true, true. Well, for all the drama the Roise that was happening. You know what surprise me the most? ALONGSO retired his car. Like for all the drama that you've done, the Albans were out. It's Williams, you were nowhere on the show yesterday, I think, like they were just on that. Exampleativa was usually I think he banged into stroll in that first lap start, both in bod this Canadians were yeah, both Canadians running into each other, but otherwise it was it was more of a you know, quiet race for for those those for five drivers were all a good race, definitely, I mean except all the all the adrenal in that we are finally coming down on for sure. Oh, by the way, one thing I wanted to I wanted to go a special shout out to someone. So I think we have another member on the product who's kind of joining the hall of fame, or rather hall of shame, along with to though, because do you know, Alan were under Moore, who's basic the medical car driver. Apparently it turns out he's an antivaxxer. He's he's literally the only person on the entire paddock who's not vaccinated and because of that I think he missed last time's rays because of that. Of course it's us, so there are no rules here. Pretty much joy somewhere without vaccine. But so I was back. But I think he's going to okay, so think about it. Okay, Saudi Arabia has strict rules about good then us just saying. But because he's going to miss the Saudi Arabia and Kapa race, but he was able to attend the US rays without saw these Saudi's got all fone stricter clothing wise as well. So ash is cash is king is at a new level in Saudi. So that's anyways out of their discussion and picture. But yeah, Dude, I'm I'm I didn't know this. I'm more curious on why does in FIA stand behind this in just sack him. Yeah, I mean, yeah, definitely should. Tending a message, right, like you're allowing someone who's an anti accide to common yeah, yeah, I'm sure less like a huge line of drivers lining up in front of a fire's office to get that job, because it's one of the best jobs out there in the Pardo Ray. Yeah, especially for somebody who's probably like a retired driver something. I mean, you are there at have one always. You don't have to, like you're not under any pressure, but still you I get to enjoy everything on a surep note, I think. I think gimme at the end of everything, I think I lost few laps. was just like done with his racing. Did you see the drift from Jimmy driving off the grammarl then coming back onto that track, just amazing around over there? Yeah, creating like a virtual safety car or a safety care for for yeah, it was a virtual safety card. I think it was like for a very short amount of time. But yeah, it was that. I...

Yeah, I think, yeah, he's just going to, we know, count his days and just fuck back and and finally had a happy moment where you, on the last lap, cleared science to get to it. Oh Yeah, Oh yeah, that was a good closure for him. And the only surprising part after all of this was Shacquilo nail coming in. What they were? That hell of a car was with big horns and what was that? I loved it. I loved it, man. That was just amazing. You know, one thing when the podium ceremony was going on and like seculonnial was like standing in between Max and Lu Yas. Right, these guys are shorter than him, even after starting on the podium steps. That's true. That's true. It's true. It's a wonder done this name where they've even shounk others a bit more. So it looks like there is a there is a giant standing on the podium. yeahsly awkward. There's this other meme where it was like Serena came to Monico to congratulate Louis, but Max won and then, similarly, like Shaquillo Neil came to Austin to Congratulateis but maximne any who. This has been a heck of for Rasemen. Five, five more races. Love it. The championship battle, I think like it's still on, you know, even though it's at twelve point lead or thirteen or something like that lead, it is still anybody's game.
